The first leg of my trek to Vancouver Island was a mix of progress and adjustment. The trek began strong, with almost 9,000 steps and a total distance of 4 miles accomplished when we arrived in Port Hardy. This beautiful village on the northern coast of Vancouver Island greeted me with a warm welcome.
Upon arrival, I had the pleasure of meeting Andrea, the local host, and her companions—a mother-and-daughter duo—who made my expedition more personal. Although I didn’t get to explore much of Port Hardy, my first thoughts were pleasant. The cuisine at both the hotel and the airport was adequate, providing a good start to the trip.
The accommodations were nice, providing much-needed rest after a long day of physical activity. However, the strain of carrying a 23-pound duffel bag started to take its toll. Exhaustion came in, followed by a sleepless night due to severe leg cramps. My error of forgetting Tylenol and Aspercreme did not help matters.
As the pains started in my foot and spread up my leg, I turned to my Crocs for support. This short cure actually worked and allowed me to get some much-needed rest. Despite the modest adjustments, the first day set a firm basis for the days that will follow. I’m excited to delve more into the adventures that await me on my journey through the Inside Passage.
