Nanuk – The Polar Bear

I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification:  Certificate of completion from Co-management Commons course: “The Inuit Knowledge of Nanuk”. the course covers the Inuit’s traditional relationship with Polar Bears. This short course, embedded in the link, is designed to take you through five key implications of the relationship of the Polar Bear to the Inuit people.

  • The need for taking care, the conservation and sustainability of Polar Bear populations

  • Observations of the bears from the perspectives of the Indigenous people of the arctic across the entire area from Alaska, through the norther Canadian Provinces, and on to Greenland
  • Uses of the bear as a food source, clothing, and even tools
  • Safety & encounters

  • Lastly, the co-management efforts of the different Inuit peoples across the arctic and the government agencies along with the scientists and environmental stewards. Within each of the management areas across the Arctic, there are variations in bear population, climate, sustainability for the local Inuit, and harvesting histories (both from a participant-Indigenous or otherwise) that needs to be taken into consideration. From the Inuit perspective, they need more voice at the management role to be able to bring their knowledge and requirements as they relate to the above points of the course.
  • In addition the course provides many additional resources.
