Dawn Wright

Get to know Deep Sea Dawn!

Dawn Wright is a chief scientist at Esri who works with communities around the world to survey and analyze marine ecosystems using Geographical Information Science (GIS) and other mapping tools. But she’s best known as Deep Sea Dawn!

As a PhD. student in 1991, Wright became the first African American woman to dive in the WHOI-operated submersible Alvin, researching the connections between mid-ocean ridge volcanism, plate tectonics, hydrothermal circulation, and vent ecosystems.

In 2022, she became the first Black person to dive to the Challenger Deep—the deepest part of the Mariana Trench—as part of a Caladan Oceanic research initiative. That same year, she became a WHOI Corporation member, a role she continues to serve in today!
